Fire crews respond to brush fire near McCarran

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Fire crews have responded to the call of a large brush fire near McCarran Airport. It is happening near the intersection of Sunset and Spencer just south of the airport.

No buildings have caught fire as a result of the brush fire. Traffic is blocked on several streets in the area as crews fight the fire.

Suspect identified in deadly DUI crash

NORTH LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Police have identified the man who they say caused a deadly crash early Saturday morning. Police believe impairment played a factor when 46-year-old Anthony Peniston hit another car and killed the 72-year-old man behind the wheel.

Around 4:30 am, officers say Peniston’s vehicle ran through a stop sign at the intersection of Aliante Parkway and Broadwing Drive. At the same time, another vehicle driven by the 72-year-old victim was turning in the intersection — that’s when the collision happened.

Investigators also believe Peniston was driving at a high rate of speed leading up to the crash. He has been booked on the charge of felony reckless driving with death or substantial bodily harm and driving under the influence with death.

Police have not yet released the identity of the victim, as they are notifying his next of kin. Police say the victim was leaving a senior community when the incident happened... Read More

McDonald, Davis propel Hawaii past UNLV 21-7

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Cole McDonald ran for two touchdowns and Cortez Davis picked off a pass and returned it 43 yards for the go-ahead score as Hawaii rallied for a 21-7 victory over UNLV on Saturday.

Kenyon Oblad’s 31-yard scoring strike to Darren Woods Jr. gave UNLV a 7-0 lead after one quarter.

McDonald ended a 10-play, 90-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run with 22 seconds left before halftime to knot the score at 7.

The game remained tied until Davis picked off Oblad with 1:33 left in the third quarter for a 14-7 Rainbow Warriors (7-4, 4-3 Mountain West Conference) lead. McDonald wrapped up the victory with a 2-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter.

McDonald completed 20 of 26 passes for 211 yards. He ran for 43 yards on 11 carries.

Carter gets winner in 1,000th game, Kings top Golden Knights

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jeff Carter scored in his 1,000th career game, and the Los Angeles Kings beat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3 on Saturday for their third straight victory.

Drew Doughty had a goal and an assist for the Kings, who are on their longest win streak of the season. Nikolai Prokhorkin scored his first career goal, and Jonathan Quick made 28 saves.

Max Pacioretty and Jonathan Marchessault each had a goal and an assist for the Golden Knights, who have lost five straight. William Karlsson also scored, and Malcolm Subban made 21 saves.

Carter tipped Matt Roy’s shot from the blue line to put the Kings ahead 4-3 at 12:42 of the third period. It was the 371st career goal and 713th point for Carter, who also played his 500th game with the Kings.

Parents, 3 sons die in apparent murder-suicide in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A husband and wife and three of their young children died Saturday morning at the family’s San Diego home in what police believe was a murder-suicide sparked by a bitter divorce.

Police Lt. Matt Dobbs told reporters that officers arrived at the home shortly before 7 a.m. Saturday following a 911 call from the residence in which a dispatcher heard someone being asked to leave. As they traveled there another call came from a neighbor saying they heard a sound coming from the home that sounded like a nail gun.

Officers looked through a window and saw a small boy inside covered in blood. They broke into the house and found a 29-year-old woman, her 31-year-old husband and their 3-year-old son dead and three other boys, believed to be ages 5, 9, and 11 badly wounded.

Kaepernick’s reps call audible, workout moved at last minute

RIVERDALE, Ga. (AP) — Colin Kaepernick limbered up on a high school field after his NFL workout was suddenly moved Saturday, the latest strange twist in the saga for the exiled quarterback.

Just 15 minutes before Kaepernick was scheduled to work out for 25 NFL teams at the Atlanta Falcons’ training complex in Flowery Branch, his representatives announced the session had been moved 60 miles away to a high school in Riverdale. The stunning move seemed to catch everyone off-guard and came about an hour before the rescheduled workout was set to begin, putting many in scramble mode.

It was not known how many teams would be attending the workout in the new location.

The representatives said they called the audible to let the media watch and videotape the workout, adding the shift was prompted “because of recent decisions made by the NFL.”... Read More
