Rating customer service is commonplace in many industries, but public safety is not one of them.

That will change later this year in Henderson, as police will be the subject of a national study.

Henderson was selected as one of 100 police departments nationwide to participate in a Department of Justice’s National Institute of Justice-funded research project.

Starting later this summer, anyone who interacts with Henderson officers might be asked to rate their interaction with the officers as part of the National Police Research Platform developed and overseen by the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Center for Research in Law and Justice.

Four Businesses Fail Alcohol Compliance Check

Four Henderson businesses sold alcohol to minors last weekend in the police department’s latest sting operation.

Police officers conducted compliance checks at 78 convenience stores, grocery stores and liquor stores throughout the city of Henderson early Sunday. Of the 78 establishments, 74 did not sell alcohol to the underage person.

The businesses that failed were:

  • CVS, 1551 W. Sunset Road
  • Green Valley Grocery, 902 S. Boulder Highway
  • Lee’s Discount Liquor, 4427 E. Sunset Road
  • Whole Foods, 100 S. Green Valley Parkway

The clerks are subject to a citation for serving an underage person and face a maximum penalty of six months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. The owners or managers of a business that fails a second or third time can also be issued a citation and could face the revocation of their business license. Businesses that fail an alcohol compliance check generally are rechecked at some time in the future.

Family Creates Trust Fund for Sons of Murder Victim

The family of the Henderson woman shot and killed by her ex-husband say the couple's two sons will live with her sister.

The family of 47-year-old Dr. Renee Bassett released a new picture of her and announced a trust fund will be created to help the dentist's sons go to college.

"So, I need that security. So, I can look at them and say, 'you have the same things as your new brothers.' They need that. They need that," Bassett's sister Penny Fife said.

Fife says the community has come forward to support her family, but she says there is a better option than flowers.

The family says her and her husband had been divorced for ten years. They had joint custody of the two boys.

According to police, Bassett's ex-husband came to her house near Horizon Ridge Parkway and Arroyo Grande Boulevard Tuesday afternoon. The two started arguing and her husband shot her, police said.

The Henderson Police Traffic Unit received funding from the Department of Public Safety - Office of Traffic Safety, as part of the Joining Forces Grant.

If you’re attending a Super Bowl party or watching the game at a sports bar or restaurant, police offer the following tips:
