8 on Your Side: Bar Narrowly Avoids Costly Scam
News

HENDERSON, Nev. - Doc Holliday's Saloon is a bar in Henderson where regulars order drinks and play some games.

"We are more of a ‘Cheers' bar," Doc Holliday's manager Craig Dahlheimer said. "Everybody knows everybody."

The bar even has its version of Norm – the lovable barfly in "Cheers".  "He's not named Norm, but it is definitely a ‘Cheers' atmosphere," Dahlheimer said.

Unfortunately for Doc Holliday's, business isn't booming these days. When Dahlheimer received a fax that offered free Yelp, Facebook and Yellow Pages ads, he filled out the form. He forgot about it until, one day, he received a bill for $2,376. That's when he called 8 on Your Side.

8 on Your Side uncovered a huge scam. The offer Dahlheimer received cites "Yellow Page USA", not "Yellow Pages". It includes the Yellow Pages logo depicting walking fingers, because that logo is not trademarked or copyrighted.

The scammers didn't just target Doc Holliday's. Thousands of U.S. businesses have received similar offers. The Federal Trade Commission recently ordered the scammers to pay more than $10 million to their victims.

The news was a surprise and a relief to Dahlheimer. "I needed somebody to hit me with paddles. It was shocking," he said.

He says he hopes things will turn around at Doc Holliday's, and more people will come by for a drink, so advertising won't be a necessity in the future.

"We'll make whatever you want," he said.
