Senior Athletes Sought for Henderson Games

 

The city of Henderson is seeking athletes to take part in the 2013 Henderson Senior Games, an annual program that celebrates the spirit of friendly competition with a blend of sporting and social events for athletes ages 50 and over.

Athletes of all skill levels are invited to participate.

Registration opens Feb. 1 and runs through March 15, and costs $15 per person (with the exception of volleyball), which includes a commemorative T-shirt. There is a nominal cost per event, with most events costing $3-$5.

Registration packets are available online at http://www.cityofhenderson.com/parks/special_events/henderson_senior_games.php and at the city’s recreation centers. Although registration will not be accepted after the deadline, walk-ons may be accepted for some events pending space availability.

Registration for most winter/spring 2012 classes, events and programs offered by the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department begins at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Patrons may choose from four registration methods: online at cityofhenderson.com/parks; by mail; at the self-serve kiosks located at City Hall, Black Mountain Recreation Center, and Henderson Multigenerational Center; or in person at any recreation center. Many programs fill up quickly, so early registration is recommended.

Humana Food Drive Brings in 400 Pounds for Seniors

 

A food drive organized by Humana Guidance Centers netted 400 pounds of food for seniors near the Thanksgiving holiday.

The centers in Henderson and Summerlin collected the of food to benefit Helping Hands of Vegas Valley, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides assistive services to senior citizens in Southern Nevada. 

The food items were collected inside the Valley’s two Guidance Centers: 1000 N. Green Valley Parkway in Henderson and 8975 W. Charleston Blvd. in Las Vegas. Helping Hands of Vegas Valley picked up the food on Nov. 22 and distributed it to seniors across the Valley for the Thanksgiving holiday.
