Summer Activities Available in Las Vegas Valley

LAS VEGAS -- Summer may be very different for some kids in the Las Vegas valley as budget shortfalls close some pools and restrict others. But officials say those closures are minimum and hope the variety of choices will help parents keep their kids entertained this summer.

Summer swim lesson for the kids are just getting under way at the Silver Mesa's Rec Center's outdoor pool. Unfortunately, budget cuts will prevent a couple of other public pools in North Las Vegas from opening up this summer.

But there are still plenty of fun, affordable, and even free activities being offered the valley this summer.

"When it gets hot during the summer, you need places inside where you can take them that you know are safe and where they will have fun," said parent Isabelle Meads.

That place is the Silver Mesa Rec Center in North Las Vegas for Eloise Meads. She and her friends take gymnastics and ballet classes here every week. Parents say Silver Mesa is a lifesaver for their families in the summer.

The community rec center located on Allen near Cheyenne offers a wide range of affordable indoor and outdoor activities, including low cost swimming lessons. Unfortunately, budget cuts have taken a toll on some summer fun including the Harkey Park pool on north Bruce that won't be opening at all.

"Because of the budget cuts, we currently have a hiring freeze so two of our four public swimming pools won't be open this summer. They are our two oldest and least attended pools. We kept the newer, more popular and well attended pools open," said Jody Walker with North Las Vegas.

Silver Mesa plans to be open this weekend for the Memorial Day holiday.
