What's Cool At School: Virtual clubs keeping O'Callaghan Middle School students connected

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- In today's "What's Cool At School," Brian Loftus shared how a variety of virtual clubs are keeping students at O'Callaghan Middle School students connected.

During this unusual school year, Principal Scott Fliger says, "It's paramount to the success of students, in my opinion, we have to offer a variety of opportunities."

O'callaghan Middle School's 16 clubs includ:

  • Yoga
  • Chess
  • Coding
  • Orchestra
  • Drama
  • Dance
  • Art
  • Music
  • Gaming
  • Anime

'When we found out we were going to be online, we had to come up with different ways to teach them," said Christina Dickinson, PE, Tech Fit, Dance.

Builder's club builds items for the community, including Meals On Wheels. Equality clubs address social justice and equity. In robotics, students coded using virtual simulations of robots.

"The kids love Robotics, and so do I….I love the Robotics, I love the a-ha moments that our kids experience," said Joan Drew, Teacher, Robotics.

"They're working, like, taking them under their wing….and I really love that that's happening!" added Drew.

An engineering club called Techfit did so well that their work was nationally recognized during a Purdue University competition.

"They created it, they designed it, they programmed it, they engineered it, and then they had to put it in a National Championship competition. They actually won the championship," said Christina Dickinson, PE, Tech Fit, Dance.

"It is amazing…it's amazing because these teachers, no one asked them to do this," said Jody Finnegan, Assistant Principal.

"I'm highly impressed with the dedication of this staff," said Scott Fliger, Principal.
