UPDATE: Metro police kill suspect who kidnapped former girlfriend on east side of Las Vegas valley

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Las Vegas police shot and killed a man Tuesday who they say kidnapped and held his former girlfriend hostage. The shooting happened near E. Charleston Avenue and Sloan Lane, east of Nellis Boulevard.

According to police, on Oct. 12 at approximately 9:33 a.m., LVMPD officers responded to the 5600 block
of East Lake Mead Boulevard due to reports of a domestic-related kidnapping and shooting.

Patrol officers arrived and learned that a male forcibly entered the apartment and kidnapped his ex-girlfriend.

During that incident, he fired a handgun however there were no injuries reported.

Police say, as the investigation progressed, officers located the suspect walking with the female near East
Charleston Boulevard and Sloan Lane.

As soon as the suspect saw the officers, he held the female at gunpoint and began walking away.

Police sources told 8 News Now that the suspect pointed his gun at the female and at officers several times and then fired several rounds.

When the suspect pointed his firearm at officers, an officer armed with a rifle shot the suspect.

The suspect was pronounced deceased on the scene by medical personnel.

The woman was not injured during the incident

Jim Johnson, an 8NewsNow viewer who drove near the scene, said police had an Albertson's grocery store parking lot cordoned off with traffic being diverted off of Charleston at Sloan.

Johnson said the only thing an officer would tell him was that "it's a critical situation."

Captain Carlos Hank provided a media statement below:

This is the eighth officer-involved shooting in LVMPD's jurisdiction in 2021. The identity of the officer involved will be released after 48 hours.
