The City of Henderson received a handful of awards for its work at the Program Excellence Awards of the Nevada Recreation and Park Society (NRPS).

Dirk Richwine, recreation superintendent for the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department, received the NRPS Citation Award for outstanding contribution to the field of public parks and recreation. Richwine received the award for his contributions on the local, state, regional, and national levels. He is a fellow of the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration and was appointed by the National Park and Recreation Association (NRPA) as its representative to the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA).

Agencies from around the state submitted their work to NRPS for award consideration. Henderson’s Parks and Recreation Department received four Elmer Anderson Awards for excellence in parks. They include:

  • Project of the Year—Bark Park at Heritage Park
  • Excellence— Madeira Canyon Park
  • Excellence—Whitney Mesa Nature Preserve
  • Excellence—Amador Vista Park

Two recreation programs were also recognized:

  • Health/fitness category—Youth Enrichment Fitness Program
  • Inclusive category—2010 Holiday/Christmas Tree Recycling Program

NRPS is a nonprofit professional organization comprised of people in the recreation, parks, leisure, and related industries in the state of Nevada. The group became affiliated with the National Park and Recreation Association in 1964.

The nationally accredited City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department provides premium services through diverse and innovative parks, recreation and natural resource opportunities. It serves the community with seven recreation centers (including a facility for adults 50 and over), 11 pools, 52 parks, five skate parks, two sports complexes, more than 60 linear miles of trails, Acacia Demonstration Gardens, the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, and thousands of programs for people of all ages and abilities.
