Free Water Safety Event Held by City Parks and Rec

The City of Henderson will hold a free water safety day at Black Mountain Aquatic Complex on Saturday, May 7.

May is National Water Safety Month, and the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a free event designed to ensure parents know how to protect children in and around the water.

The free event takes place at Black Mountain Aquatic Complex, 599 Greenway Rd., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration is recommended, as space is limited. Register online at cityofhenderson.com/parks (activity code 136000-00) or in person at any City of Henderson recreation center or year-round pool.

Water Safety Day provides parents, grandparents, babysitters, and day care providers an opportunity to learn how to keep children safe in an aquatic environment and how to safeguard homes and pools. The event includes information about the City ofHenderson’s American Red Cross Learn To Swim programs as well as booths hosted by community partners such as the U. S. Coast Guard. Demonstrations will take place throughout the event focusing on basic water rescue, CPR/first aid, and water safety techniques.

According to the Southern Nevada Health District, drowning is a leading cause of unintentional death in Southern Nevada for young children, and the most common drowning victim is a child age 4 or younger.
