The National Park Service is waiving lake use fees Saturday, May 28 through Monday, May 30 on Lake Mead and Lake Mohave – a savings of $16 per vessel – for boaters who show proof of completing an approved boating course.

"Statistics show that the majority of boaters who are involved in accidents report that they haven't completed a formal boating education course," Superintendent Bill Dickinson said.

U.S. Coast Guard statistics showed that in 2009, 78 percent of boating accidents and 86 percent of boat fatalities involved operators with no formal boating education.

"We're announcing this early so boaters who haven't taken a course will have a chance to do so before the holiday weekend," Dickinson said.

The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is offering teens an enriching summer program that provides both career and life skills.

The purpose of the department’s Teens-N-Training (TNT) junior leader program is to train teens to become future recreation leaders and to provide assistance with the Parks and Recreation Department's summer programs. TNT encourages self-confidence and positive communication skills. Responsible teens selected to participate are assigned based on skills, interests, availability, and location preference.

Applications are available online at cityofhenderson.com (type TNT in the search box) and at all City of Henderson recreation centers. Participation is open to teens ages 14 and 15 at a cost of $110.

This Saturday, Special Olympics Nevada will be presenting a free flag football clinic, open to all Special Olympic Athletes and special needs individuals. The clinic is being put on with the help of Matt Petit, a local Eagle Scout Candidate, and will feature UNLV Football players as well as players from local high schools helping teach the basics of flag football. Coach Jim Fassel will be leading the clinic, which is set to conclude with a game, special needs athletes on teams with their non-disabled partners.
